Is AI going to take your VLSI Job?
ChatGPT, Generative AI These names sounds like you have heard them before, right? Now a days even if you are slightly interested in tech field and follow tech news here & there you must have heard these terms quite a lot. Every other media platform is just talking about AI is going to take human Jobs. Every other day some tech influencers are posting videos on social media platform demonstrating how generative AI can be useful for creating deepfake images, videos and changing the voice tones.
But is AI only here to do these things? And at present or in future will it be capable enough to handle the complex job which engineers are doing today? Specifically we will talk about VLSI field. So read till end to get the proper answer of the question which almost everyone is asking “Is AI going to take human Jobs?”.
How AI models work?
Before we discuss the bigger issue, we need to go a step back and analyze the working method of these models? How these models work, ultimately these software’s are designed by humans only so before we can predict anything we need to understand its functioning.
See everything starts from data. Lets say you hire someone in your company, so how you will make that person efficient enough so that he can handle the job. First of all you will train him. How you will give him training? You will provide him some already available material to go through. Similar approach is used for Artificial intelligence models.
Good amount of data is feed into the model. Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP) these approaches are used to help the model in understanding different patterns, different algorithms. Deep learning is used to provide the model a neural network so that it can process various data & mimic the human brain.
Just to make one point clear hear that since the amount of data which is required to feed in models for training them so that they can accurately predict the output is too vast. So in order to provide the fast & complex problem solving computation skills in artificial intelligence models High performance chips are needed. Even though you might have latest AI models in your system but the chipset in your system is if not high performance one, you may not be able to unlock the full potential of the models. Nvidia is cashing on this issue.
Can Artificial Intelligence handle the complex jobs at present?
Till now, you have understood the working fundamental of it. Now lets talk about artificial intelligence birth story. Artificial intelligence term is in use since 1960. People have been working on this technology, it now new. But in last couple of years the kind of products/models which have come into the market that have started creating this buzz around. ChatGPT was launched on November 30, 2022, 2 years back from now.
Now if we talk about VLSI field there so many jobs/domains in this starting with Analog & Digital Design to Physical design, Layout, Timing Analysis, Silicon Testing, Pre silicon testing, silicon life management & so on. Now if you know about VLSI you must be knowing that how much human intelligence is needed in all of these job profiles. Wherever Human effort is only needed & intelligence part is not needed at larger scale those Job profiles at present or may be in next 2-3 years may get replaced with artificial intelligence.
But the complex job profile where human experience is needed for decision making, human intelligence is needed for execution of task are extremely safe. For any project the decision which an 10-12 years experienced individual will take keeping in mind various other parameters to reach at that level of decision making computer models need to get feed with enormous amount of data, algorithms needs to be make more efficient.
If you are someone who is just starting his/her career in VLSI design domain, you should focus on building skillset which is needed to succeed in this industry. At Mosyan, we have written this article which talks about different skillsets needed for chip design process. You should read this article as per our recommendation:

Final Verdict
Is AI going to take human jobs?, depends. As mentioned before if your skillset/job is something which is just about putting effort and human intelligence/experience doesn’t have much role to play, you are under radar. Still you have time before artificial intelligence can replace your Job but that time is not significant enough. So update your skill-set and command something which is difficult to learn & have high demand.
On the other hand if your job role is something which needs decision making based on experience or involve high amount of human intelligence to solve complex problems then you don’t need to worry. You are safe atleast for a decade. But as people change is the only constant. So keep in mind that your rival AI is also speeding up & scaling up. Not today but may be in few years it will start challenging you. So always update your with new tech skill sets.
Use Artificial Intelligence models for higher productivity
Even you can use AI to enhance your skillsets. Leverage the opportunities of AI models and try to streamline those tasks which doesn’t need much problem-solving skillset through AI. In this way you can improve your efficiency. So rather than getting afraid from AI use AI tools to improve productivity.
