Gate Preparation vs Placement: How to decide?
Almost every other engineering student face off this challenge of Gate Preparation or Placement when they reach 5th or 6th semester of their engineering. Dilemma of what to prepare for? Start preparation either for GATE or for Placements? There are few students only who have clear cut idea about this confusion. If someone is studying at IIT so for them its never a problem. Most of the IIT graduates go for placements & few of them either prepare for CAT or MS. Gate vs Placement this problem is hugely faced by private & state government college students. In this blog we will discuss about some parameters which ultimately will help you in decision making.
Advantages of Qualifying Gate?
Before reaching onto the conclusion its important to examine both of these fields carefully. Usually Gate exam is conducted in the month of February and students who are in 8th semester of engineering can give this exam. This exam helps individuals to get an admission in IITs/IISC for their post graduation program. Also many PSUs accept GATE score for their recruitment.
Who should Prepare for GATE?
If you are someone who is doing engineering from that college where hardly any company visits for recruitment then its become an obvious choice for an individual to prepare for GATE assuming he/she is interested in technical/core subjects.
If you have aim of getting a good salary job in big MNC, GATE can cater your need. Studying into IIT opens up many opportunities for an individual. Various companies recruit post graduates from IIT at decent package.
Now if you are someone who aims to do big in academics, choosing GATE should be no brainer for you. GATE gives you the opportunity to get teachings from renowned professors under whom you can continue your PhD as well. So if you want to choose the higher studies path, GATE should be your choice.
GATE Qualified students who gets enrolled for M.Tech in any AICTE approved institute gets 12400 INR per month as scholarship for 24 months. This financial aid helps individual to continue their research work.
GATE Preparation vs Placements Preparation
So far we have discussed 2 things: Advantages of qualifying GATE exam & Who should prepare for GATE. Now let’s understand what is the basic difference between the GATE preparation & preparing for placements? The IIT who is supposed to prepare the GATE paper for the year releases the schedule for each branch in the month of June-July itself so that students can get enough time to prepare for the topics. Usually IITs target few specific subjects in GATE exam, whatever an individual has studied in 4 years of Engineering not all the subjects are asked in GATE exam. Core subjects are mainly targeted along with aptitude and math questions.
Now if we talk about Placements it depends for which company you are preparing or to be precise for which job profile your preparation is going on. Lets say if a VLSI company is about to come in your college and you are preparing for Analog job profile then you will have to command Signals & Systems, control system, network theory, Analog electronics thoroughly. Similarly if you are preparing for communication related company your subject of preparation will change.
So we can understand here that until you haven’t decided in which specific field you want job, you will have to prepare almost all the engineering subjects in case if you only need a job irrespective of any field.
Conclusion
Based on what so ever we have discussed till now one thing is clear GATE preparation is mostly the subset of Job preparation. Its clear that only preparing the subjects won’t be enough in order to get decent GATE score. Candidates joins test series, online/offline lectures to command GATE exam subjects from the root level. But at the basic level if you are preparing for placements that’s definitely going to help you in your GATE preparation as well. Also good thing is that GATE exam is conducted in February by then in most of the colleges placement drives are almost over. So by that time you will also be quite clear in terms of your Job or GATE exam.
